How To Get A Free Logo Design

This post will explain how to get a free logo design for your business or organisation.

When you start a new business getting a logo designed is one of the first tasks. Your logo is an important part of your branding. It should instantly speak to people so that you are identified, and they can understand what your business is all about.

Ideally, everyone would love to get a professional graphic designer to come up with something unique. However, many people can’t afford the costs. Fortunately, there is a free option.

Designing Company Logos

I have been involved with the design of numerous different company logos over the years. In some cases I used graphic design agencies. For others I used the cheap design marketplace service Fiverr.com. Of course, the success of any design service will stand or fall on the skills of the designer. I have been lucky to have used some good providers in the past.

The logo for this site “Free Marketing Ideas”, I produced myself. The process involved using a free tool that is available online.

I should make it clear that I am not a graphic designer, I just needed a cheap logo to get my site off the ground.

The designers that I have previously used have been great, but there are DIY logo options. You can do the design yourself if you are marketing on a low budget. In the case of this website, I designed the logo using a simple, free online design tool called Canva.com

Free Canva Logo Design

Canva is a brilliant tool that you can use for a wide variety of graphic design tasks. It is especially good for free logo design, as the complimentary version of the service includes a number of templates. You can adapt those templates to create your own brand.

To give you an idea, below is the template that I started with, which I selected from a range of different options:

You can see the resemblence, I took the basic design and used the online Canva editor to adapt it. This enabled me to create my own unique logo.

How To Create The Logo Design

These were the steps. Firstly, I enlarged the design to fill the template, then I changed the colours and the image in the centre. The free version of the software included the lightbulb icon that I went with. I then replaced the pulse outline on the original with the lightbulb. Secondly, I changed the type font and wording, to match my branding. Thirdly, I removed the strapline at the bottom.

Lastly, I exported the image as a JPEG and a PNG file, to be added to my website. The original logo was 500 pixels square so I then used a free photo editor, that came with my PC, to resize it. I used the smaller version in the website header.

Quick Design Turnaround

End-to-end, the whole process took me about half a hour. That is considerably less than the fastest design services that I have used. OK, I’m probably not going to win any design awards, but the logo has received favourable feedback from people. Importantly, it cost me absolutely nothing to create.
