Finding Beauty Advent Calendars: Why Popular Calendars Sell Out Early

Christmas may still feel a long way off when beauty advent calendars begin appearing for sale, but for some of the most popular calendars, waiting until December can mean waiting too long.

Beauty advent calendars have developed into a significant seasonal market, with retailers competing to offer collections of skincare, make-up, fragrance and other beauty products at prices that are often substantially below the stated value of the individual contents.

More importantly from a Demand Hunt perspective, demand can arrive remarkably early.

Looking for a Beauty Advent Calendar?

Popular calendars can sell out surprisingly early, but there are usually plenty of alternatives available across different brands, price ranges and types of beauty products.

Why Have Beauty Advent Calendars Become So Popular?

Part of the appeal is easy to understand. Buyers may receive a collection of products with a stated retail value considerably higher than the price they pay.

But there may be more going on than simple value for money.

Beauty advent calendars and growing UK seasonal demand

For adults, an advent calendar can recreate a little of the anticipation that made Christmas exciting as a child: opening something new every day and not knowing exactly what is coming next. Replace a small chocolate with skincare, make-up, fragrance or another luxury product and the same basic idea suddenly appeals to a very different audience.

There is also an element of affordable indulgence. Someone might hesitate to buy 24 separate beauty products for themselves, but buying one calendar can feel like a special Christmas treat.

They also work particularly well as gifts. A partner looking for something more imaginative than a conventional Christmas present can effectively give a gift that lasts for much of December. Because calendars are released well before Christmas, they can also become an early Christmas present in their own right.

And, of course, plenty of people simply buy them for themselves.

These different motivations can overlap. A beauty advent calendar can simultaneously be a bargain, a luxury purchase, a Christmas tradition, a gift and a month-long experience.

That combination may help explain why demand can become intense around particular calendars.

Beauty Advent Calendar Buying Starts Long Before December

The traditional advent calendar might be something you think about buying in November. Beauty advent calendars can operate on a very different timetable.

Some retailers begin building waiting lists before their calendars are released, with launches taking place during late summer and early autumn.

There is evidence that consumers are responding.

According to Circana data reported by Cosmetics Business, UK prestige beauty advent calendar sales exceeded £13.9 million in just one week at the end of August 2025, more than double the sales recorded during the equivalent week a year earlier.

That is an extraordinary amount of Christmas-related beauty spending before September has even begun.

Why Do Beauty Advent Calendars Sell Out?

Several factors can combine to create unusually strong demand.

The Contents Can Appear to Offer Substantial Value

Many beauty calendars contain products with a combined stated retail value far above the price of the calendar.

For somebody who already uses beauty products, or wants to try products they might not normally buy individually, that can make a calendar attractive even at a relatively high purchase price.

Supply Can Be Limited

An advent calendar is a seasonal product. Once a particular edition has sold through, producing another large batch may not be practical.

This creates a different buying decision from an everyday beauty product that can simply be restocked.

Buyers Know Popular Calendars May Disappear

Once consumers become accustomed to sought-after calendars selling out, this can encourage earlier buying in subsequent years.

Waiting lists and early-access schemes can reinforce this behaviour by moving the buying decision even further forward.

They Have Become Gifts as Well as Advent Calendars

A beauty advent calendar does not necessarily have to be purchased by the person who will open it.

Higher-value calendars can also be bought as substantial Christmas gifts, while the individual products inside some calendars may themselves be suitable for gifting.

Evidence That the Sell-Outs Are Real

This isn’t simply a case of retailers creating a sense of urgency around Christmas products.

There are numerous examples of prominent beauty advent calendars selling out well before December.

For example, beauty retailer Space NK said its 2025 beauty advent calendar sold out within two and a half weeks. It also reported that registrations for the 2025 calendar waiting list had increased by 60% compared with the previous year.

Other major beauty calendars have also sold out during previous seasons, sometimes weeks before the traditional Christmas shopping period reaches its peak.

Beauty isn’t the only advent calendar category where Demand Hunt has seen unusually early demand. We have also tracked exceptionally strong demand and signs of constrained availability for a popular squishy toy advent calendar, showing how quickly seasonal demand can run ahead of available stock.

The precise calendars in demand will change from year to year, but the broader pattern is what interests us: beauty advent calendars can experience significant demand well ahead of Christmas itself.

Where to Find Beauty Advent Calendars

Beauty advent calendars are now sold by a wide range of retailers, from beauty specialists and department stores to individual beauty brands and online marketplaces.

If you have a particular calendar in mind, the original retailer or brand is usually the obvious place to start. However, popular editions can sell out quickly, so it may also be worth checking larger marketplaces for remaining stock or considering one of the many alternative calendars available.

Amazon has a broad selection covering different brands and price ranges, including calendars from well-known beauty companies as well as less expensive alternatives.

eBay can also be useful for finding particular calendars, including ones that may no longer be readily available from their original retailer. As with any marketplace purchase, check the seller, price, condition and contents carefully before buying.

It is also worth checking major beauty retailers and department stores directly. Their ranges change each year, and some offer waiting lists or early access before calendars officially go on general sale.

If the calendar you originally wanted has sold out, don’t automatically assume you need to pay an inflated price for it. There are often plenty of other beauty advent calendars still available.

Or Make Your Own Beauty Advent Calendar

If ready-made beauty calendars cost more than you want to spend, or you want extra brownie points by creating something totally personal, you can make your own using an unfilled advent calendar kit.

Empty fill-your-own advent calendar kits let you choose the contents yourself. For an adult beauty calendar, you could fill the compartments with a mixture of smaller skincare products, make-up, fragrances, toiletries, chocolates or other treats. It can also make the gift much more personal, because you can choose products you know the recipient will actually use rather than relying on the selection chosen by a beauty brand.

It also gives you control over the budget. The individual gifts don’t all need to be expensive, and a few larger or more special items can be mixed with inexpensive everyday treats.

Make It More Personal Than a Shop-Bought Calendar

The biggest advantage of making your own advent calendar isn’t necessarily saving money. It is that you can create something that couldn’t be bought in a shop.

You can leave out the products they won’t want and include special, thoughtful items that will mean something to them personally. Some compartments can contain beauty products or small treats, while others can contain memories, messages or objects connected with your relationship.

Not every compartment needs to contain something valuable. In fact, some of the most memorable items might cost almost nothing.

Ideas To Personalise An Advent Calendar For Your Partner

Here are a few ideas to put in an advent calendar for your partner that will make it really personal and thoughtful:

  • Something special of yours for them to keep – a small personal item that has a story or meaning attached to it.
  • Something connected to where you first met – perhaps a photograph, ticket, postcard, map, menu or small item connected with the place.
  • A photograph they may have forgotten about – print a favourite picture from years ago rather than simply choosing one that already sits on their phone.
  • A handwritten memory – write down a moment you remember particularly clearly from your relationship and why you still remember it.
  • A tiny reminder of a favourite trip – something connected with a holiday, weekend away or place that means something to both of you.
  • A song with a story – write the name of a song that reminds you of them, or add a QR code linking to it, together with a sentence explaining why you chose it.
  • A favourite from their childhood – a sweet, small toy or other inexpensive item they haven’t had for years can bring back surprisingly strong memories.
  • Something connected with an inside joke – probably meaningless to everybody else, which is precisely why it belongs in a personal advent calendar.
  • A clue to one of their Christmas presents – spread several clues across December if you want to make it into a small mystery.
  • A promise to do something together – not a generic printed voucher, but something you know they genuinely enjoy, such as returning to a favourite restaurant, visiting somewhere special or simply setting aside an evening for something you rarely get time to do.
  • Something they always borrow from you – give them one of their own.
  • A small luxury they wouldn’t buy for themselves – this is where miniature fragrance, skincare, make-up or another indulgence can work particularly well.
  • Their favourite treat – chocolate, sweets, coffee, tea or something else you know they will enjoy rather than whatever happens to come in a commercial calendar.
  • A message about something you admire about them – make it specific. A genuine observation will mean considerably more than a generic romantic quotation.
  • Something that represents the future – finish with a clue, photograph, booking, plan or promise connected with something you want to do together next year.

You don’t need 24 elaborate presents. A mixture of inexpensive treats, beauty products and genuinely personal items could make a homemade calendar far more memorable than one costing considerably more in a shop.

Should You Pay More for a Sold-Out Calendar?

This is where some caution is worthwhile.

A calendar being difficult to find does not automatically mean it is worth paying considerably more than its original selling price.

Before buying from a marketplace, check the seller, condition, delivery details and exactly what is included. It is also worth comparing the asking price with the calendar’s original retail price and with other calendars that remain readily available.

Scarcity can make something desirable, but it doesn’t necessarily make it good value.

Is There a Business Opportunity?

Strong demand for beauty advent calendars can create opportunities beyond simply selling the calendars themselves.

Retailers and beauty businesses may be able to respond by stocking relevant products earlier, promoting their own Christmas gift ranges or creating alternative beauty gift bundles. Online publishers, affiliates and content creators may also benefit from helping consumers find calendars that are still available, compare alternatives or locate particular products as availability changes.

There may also be opportunities for marketplace sellers, but this requires more caution. Buying large quantities of a particular calendar in the hope that it will sell out is speculation, not a guaranteed opportunity. Demand can change quickly and a product that appears scarce today could be restocked tomorrow.

The more interesting lesson for businesses is therefore the timing of the demand. If consumers are spending heavily on Christmas-related beauty products in August and September, businesses waiting until November to target that demand may already be late.

This is one of the reasons Demand Hunt monitors early demand signals. The opportunity is not necessarily to copy whatever is currently selling out, but to identify what changing consumer behaviour might create opportunities around it.

Why Demand Hunt Is Tracking Beauty Advent Calendars

Beauty advent calendars are interesting to Demand Hunt for a reason that goes beyond Christmas shopping.

They demonstrate how demand for a seasonal product can begin much earlier than its obvious point of use.

Someone looking at Christmas demand only in November could therefore completely miss an important part of the buying cycle.

They also illustrate several of the characteristics we look for when identifying unusual demand:

  • demand accelerating within a relatively short period;
  • products with limited or seasonal supply;
  • evidence of consumers buying earlier to secure availability;
  • individual products selling out while alternatives remain available; and
  • the possibility that demand and supply temporarily become unbalanced.

That does not mean every beauty advent calendar will become difficult to find. There are many different calendars available and popularity varies enormously.

But when particular editions attract strong demand, availability can tighten surprisingly early.

That is exactly the sort of change Demand Hunt is designed to spot.
